The Childminding2030 Manifesto
8 policy changes that would unlock 30,000 new childminders
Create a national plan to recruit and support more childminders
The Government should have a clear, joined-up strategy to encourage more people to become childminders and to recognise the vital role they play in early years education.
Let childminders receive funded hours for children they are related to
Childminders should be allowed to claim Government-funded childcare hours when caring for children they are related to - such as grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Pay childminders more fairly for funded childcare for 3–4 year olds
The Government should increase the amount it pays childminders for funded childcare hours for 3-4 year olds, so rates better reflect the true cost of care.
Make regulation fairer and reduce unnecessary costs
The fees and regulatory costs faced by childminders should be simplified and reduced, so they are treated fairly and consistently regardless of how they are registered.
Include all childminders in the nursery milk scheme
The rules should be updated so certain childminders aren’t excluded from the nursery milk scheme.
Reduce confusion caused by different rules in different areas
Early years policies and processes should be more consistent across local authorities, so childminders don’t face a postcode lottery of different requirements and systems.
Make it easier to run a childminding business from home
Remove the admin and regulatory barriers making it harder for those living in council-owned or privately rented homes to start childminding, and remove planning permission barriers from those who own their own home.
Pause Wear and Tear Allowance changes
The Government should pause on Wear and Tear Allowance changes and act on the sector’s concerns, giving time for clear guidance and proper preparation.
